Got water Damage? Act fact!

9/11/2020 (Permalink)

Lady on weighted extractor Lady using the weighted extractor to extract water from a commercial carpet

Water leaks from a broken facet can cause flooding in a home or business and if not mitigated quickly, can cause business disruption and secondary damage, such as damaged furniture, inability to use the affected areas and possible mold growth.

In this case, the water supply line from the toilet in a commercial building in downtown Brentwood, CA burst and flooded the kitchenette and gym area.

The business owner did not hesitate to call our team to remediate the situation and the swift response from our team helped prevent the property and contents having a secondary damage.

With this weighted extractor equipment, more water is extracted from the carpet by taking advantage of the added weight of the operator.

We sure made it look "Like it never even happened."

We use science to our advantage in deodorizing

8/23/2020 (Permalink)

In recent times we have been asked by our clients about eliminating odors after a storm damage that affected their homes, offices, cars and boats.

Some odors can linger after a storm event and it can be very disturbing to the property owner. Sometimes these smells cannot be completed eliminated without a carpet or padding removal and disposing. Also, for any deodorizing protocol used, the protocol might need to be applied a few times to completely neutralize the pungent odor.

We at SERVPRO like to use the OZONE generator which is used to oxidize organic odors such as smoke, pet odors, mildew, organic pollutants and more without chemicals and that is used for oxidizing, bleaching, disinfecting, and deodorizing.

We use this technology especially for clients that do not like a chemical odor neutralizing protocol in their property.

Do you know where your emergency water shut off is?

8/22/2020 (Permalink)

Water damages are a very unexpected event that can occur any part of the house that is connected to any water source. The adverse secondary impact of a water damage for the home owner is enormous.

We at SERVPRO understand that water damages happen unexpectedly but we also understand that we can live prepared for damages because “prior preparation prevents poor performance”.

We advise that property owners are aware of the emergency water shut off within the property and how they operate in the case of a water damage. All emergency shutoffs should also be regularly checked by a professional to ensure they work properly in an event of an emergency.

Finally, repairs of leaking facets and pipes should be carried out urgently to prevent degeneration that can cause a water damage.

Organic Odor Neutralizing Services

8/22/2020 (Permalink)

In SERVPRO we have mastered the biological composition of odors and have a range of products to tackle various kinds of odors.

For Example, SERVPRO’s Bio Odor Neutralizer is a concentrated odor-neutralizing agent that works by forming a complex bond with the odor causing molecules, especially sulfur and amine-based odor molecules. These types of odors are commonly found in skunks, fish, cabbage, spoiled food and dead bodies.

We also commonly get requests for pet urine odor and stain remover from carpets and for that we use SERVPRO’s Urine Odor and Stain Remover which is an environmentally friendly mixture of bacterial cultures with their natural enzymes. It is used to eliminate odors and stains caused by organic residues such as: urine, feces, vomit, spilled foods, skunk, perspiration, and/or other organic wastes.

A fire in a home can cause a lot of damaging ripple effect. It can destroy precious personal property of the home owner or affect the integrity of personal property by changing the appearance or smell as a result of soot.

Living Ready in Wildfire Season

8/10/2020 (Permalink)

Wild fire season is a very precautionary time for anyone living in an area prone to wild fires. The negative ripple effect of a wild fire to a property owner cannot be underestimated.

The local authority does a very good job in warning property owners on the procedures they need to take in the event of the wild fire or home fire, in the event of an evacuation or containing the fire spread.

We advise that property owners regularly inspect the surrounding of their homes and business for leaky gas pipes, prune dead plants and properly dispose of those, prune overgrown trees; especially any close to power cables, ensure trash is disposed of properly because it can be a perfect fuel agent for fires and finally ensure the access points are free from clutter to allow the emergency services get to the source of the fire quickly.

DIY before help arrives after a fire loss

5/21/2020 (Permalink)

After a fire disaster, smoke smell lingers in a home/business and removing the smell is of utmost importance. Here are a few steps you need to remove smoke smell before a professional arrives.

Step 1: Air Out

Even when we can’t see smoke, we can smell it. When a fire loss occurs, smoke particles stick to porous and non-porous surfaces. Its important to open the windows and doors to ventilate your property. The air circulation will help clear out the space. You can also put on fans if available, though this won’t completely get rid of the smoke smell.

Step 2:

Wipe down all surfaces and launder all fabrics; like curtains, pillows, blankets.

Step 3:

In a case where the flooring is carpet, vacuum and deep clean carpet

Step 4:

Clean the HVAC system. You can also change your HVAC filters. You might need to consider a professional in a serious fire loss

Step 5:

Smells can linger from the wall paint, so a fresh coat of paint can help minimize the smoke odor and beautify your home again

Aftermath of a fire damage

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage is very devastating to any family but it is also very helpful to understand the restoration process in case of a fire damage in your property. Here are a few steps that can help facilitate the restoration process.

Typically, the first step will be calling your insurance agency. Most home insurance agencies will help you contact a restoration company. This is a very crucial step. At this point, it is important that you pick a reputable and professional company for the best price.

Secondly, once a reputable restoration company like your local SERVPRO commences work at your property, we work to remove moisture from the property that might have been pumped in the structure in a bid to stop the fire. This is important because mold growth activity can start in as little as 48 hours.

The next step is to remove debris from the loss. Removing debris helps properly ascertain the level of the loss and tailor an appropriate procedure for restoration to commence.

After the debris is removed, we deodorize the structure of any odors from the fire loss. We either use the ozone, thermal fogging or ULV misting deodorizing procedures. The walls and flooring will be thoroughly cleaned in preparation for any form of reconstruction that needs to occur after this loss.

Emergency response for damaged photos

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

Everybody thinks of ways to salvage photos damage by water or moisture. There are a couple of tips we can try before we lose hope:

  1. Do not rush the process of salvaging the photos. Evaluate the extent of damage, this will help identify the method of salvaging to use.
  2. When a porous item comes in contact with moisture, molds activity can start in as little as 48 hours. Hence, remove all photos from frames, wrap in wax paper and freeze to prevent mold growth. The wax paper will help prevent the photos from sticking together.
  3. Air dry all photos that have been frozen. Use a clean dry flat surface or table for this document recovery process. You can also line the table with some paper towels to help draw moisture from paper the bottom of the photos. Remember, do not stack the photo over each other so they stick and damage further.

The aforementioned methods are usually best suited for when you find the damage almost immediately it occurs. If discovered at a later time, these methods may not be as effective. If discovered late, please contact a professional to assess the damage and restore. It is best to find a professional to  help restore your precious item and take this stress off you.

Tailor made solutions

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

The aftermath of the introduction of a building structure to a foreign matter like soot, water or debris will have an adverse effect in the integrity of the building. The quality of the structure will start to diminish and might continue to deteriorate if the situation is not mitigated and remediation commences.

The clean and restoration of a property typically requires the removal of some damaged parts of the structure such as walls, flooring and fixtures where necessary.

While considering commercial structures; during this cleaning and restoration process, business disruptions are highly considered. An inoperable facility is equivalent to production and revenue loss.

Favorable Conditions For Mold

3/22/2020 (Permalink)

Research experts have estimated more than 1 million types of mold have been identified, however, less than 10 percent have actually been named. This shows mold is very prevalent in both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. In as much as mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, the health of some people can be affected by certain species of mold in their environment.

If favorable conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of moisture for growth to begin.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will encourage mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate moisture supply.

Mold growth can occur in any surrounding, so it is advised to keep an eye out for situations that might encourage mold growth. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a room a prime target for mold activity.

If you suspect mold growth in your home, call SERVPRO of East Concord/Brentwood to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your residential or commercial space.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

3/17/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your residential or commercial spaces, causing evident damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan to remediate.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. This also means there are various kinds of soot residue when a fire damage occurs. In order to begin restoration, SERVPRO of East Concord/Brentwood will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.  The information provided after pretesting will determine the cleaning procedures to be performed. See below some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

We tailor a unique solution based on the cause and severity of the fire damage. We have the right equipment, products, and experience to restore your property.

While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

Goal for March: Effective Communication

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

Communication is defined as imparting or exchanging information by speaking, writing or using other medium (Oxford Living Dictionary).

As human relations have evolved over the years, communication has evolved drastically and is completely different from what it was in the prehistoric era. It has evolved from alphabets, signs, letters, telephone to the internet. The internet has paved way to manifold means of communication.

However, Communication becomes effective when all parties (sender and receiver) involved, appropriate the same meanings to the message and this is through, listening carefully and understanding the sender.

Our goal as SERVPRO of East Concord/Brentwood, California for the month of march is effective communication. We intend to achieve this by going the extra mile to ensure that we maximize the appropriate means of communication with our clients and also within our internal systems.

We intend to better serve our clients and ensure a stress-free project by ensuring our marketing representatives stay in constant communication with the clients, through their preferred means of communication, while adequately documenting these processes for easy reference. This will ensure they stay in the know regarding; job progress, possible changes or adjustments and close out.

Over the years, we have observed that effective communication in our business helps the client put their trust in our team and also helps in change management in our projects.

Finally, effective communication, makes it easy for a client to give a review or feedback on their experience with our team during the project, and completing a certificate of satisfaction helps us rate how effectively we communicated with the client.
